Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
