A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
